Religion signifies oppression and corruption. In the novel, religion takes many forms as to the extent
that the role of Catholicism plays a vital part in controlling and manipulating society. The organized

system insisted by the church is contrary to what are their teachings.

The power of the church equates to the amount of power as the government holds to the extent that
most of the people are being controlled. By sticking on the belief, that anything that you would do
against the church is a moral sin, people tend to be submissive and follow whatever the church is saying.
