Our Hero’s Heroes

by: Kuliglig

When Dr. Jose Rizal's story was first introduced to me, I wondered: Is there really such a person who knows how to fight even without hurting others? Is he that smart to influence many people in the country to strive for freedom with only his novels? Is it possible to conquer war, with only a pen and paper? At that time, I thought if his story is true, then someone must be behind to support and motivate him. From whom did he get his courage?

Some people say, Dr. Rizal, known as Pepe, got his "free-soul" from his father, Francisco Mercado. He must be industrious for he was a farmer. Pepe must have acquired his stance and perseverance from him. He was a child who played a lot and asked a lot out of his naturally curious mind. I wonder how Pepe looked like when he was a baby. People say he had a big head when he was born that his mother, Teodora Alonzo, suffered from great pain during her labor. His mother is an intelligent and sophisticated woman. Maybe, he got his intelligence and self-discipline from her. I knew that her mother loves reading as he did. I think she read him stories as she carried him in her arms when he was just a baby.

Dr. Jose Rizal is known as our National Hero because of his selfless heart and sincere concern for his fellowmen, just like the descriptions about him when he was a child. He wouldn't be a man like he was when he was alive without the guidance and support of his parents. Their overflowing love and care from the very beginning of his life are what made him a hero. They were with him from his first breath until the last. Just like us, our hero's heroes are his parents.

Just like a hero, our parents are those who had given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.

Since then, I only knew and admire what Rizal has gotten through throughout his years that makes him deserved of being the National Hero, but above all, his parents, our parents, are really the ones that deserved more of our acknowledgements in life.

Aside from helping people, saving people's lives, and risking their lives for someone else's, a hero can also be someone who loves and cares for others. We should really consider our parents as our heroes, because they were the one who support and guide us for who we are today.
