Vengeance was clearly the primary cause of Simoun's collapse throughout the story. It leads Simoun to act recklessly which results in him to have so much hatred and aggressiveness. The message within the novel is that a campaign for independence fueled by hatred and vindictiveness can only breed more of the same. Based from the story, the formerly oppressed who are encouraged only by rage and desire for vengeance might turn out worse than the ones they had overthrown. On a more positive insight, an intelligent and active pacifism with moral actions could probably help Simoun attain his goals. If only Simoun had been more righteous and careful with his plans, he may succeed. His visions only ended with nothing but regrets and a waste if time. At the end, violence is never the answer to resolve something. Just like what Rizal did, he fought with Spaniards though writing, he had given a lot of thought about it without violence to avoid bloodshed. We must always keep in our minds that revenge never has a positive result because it usually causes our own downfall. We should realize this because there are times when we are blinded by our emotions, the hatred, pain, and misery which might lead us to pursue vengeance to people who did us wrong.
